Two 15 minute demonstrations of Dalcroze at a Lucy Moses School Open House. Sometimes I wonder why I say yes - but I always think of things as opportunities.
Hi everyone - anyone? This is supposed to be my first blog post where you can be interactive. I have been asked to do a 15 minute demo of children's and adult's Dalcroze at the Lucy Moses School. This is part of an Open House - something they have never done before. I am most concerned about the adult class, but I am thinking of doing a few tennis ball games. These are accessible, require no bending and stretching - important depending on who shows up - and so much can be learned from using the tennis balls. My idea for adults is to have them first pass an invisible ball - I do this alot with many ages to keep the ball from getting dropped when it is used. Then, we add the ball, come to an "agreement" about the pulse, and go from there. Dynamics, tempo, rhythmic structure, measures, phrases, and more can all be derived from a simple ball passing game. I just hope that I can come to a culminating exercise. The culminating exercise I am thinking of is to lead to the idea of anacrusis in the music. I could have a person keep the ball until they hear anacrusis and then pass it. I have a Kabalevsky small piano piece as well as a recording of Mozart's Magic Flute overture that could be culminating events.
